Phoebe Cates is a former Hollywood actress and model. She was born in New York to a family of Broadway and TV insiders. Her father, Joseph Cates, had investments on several Broadway productions as a producer and in the famous TV show, $64,000 Question. By the time Phoebe was 10, she had started a modeling career, appearing in teen-centric magazines such as Seventeen. After her unfulfilling stint as a model, she would decide to pursue a career as an actress and would debut in the 1981 film Paradise. She followed up with a couple of more movies and a TV mini-series before being cast in one of her career-defining roles in the Steven Spielberg-produced movie Gremlins in 1984. It was a huge box office hit, garnering a sequel in 1990.
